MITECO allocates 6.9 million euros to projects to reinforce stranding networks and protection of threatened species

A total of 29 projects will benefit from this aid: 16 corresponding to the first call and 13 to the second The selected projects are co-financed by NextGeneration EU European funds and will be developed until December 31, 2025. Mitec The Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has resolved a call for aid for projects toreinforce stranding networksand another for initiatives to support conservation centers for species victims of illegal trade included in the CITES Convention (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).

Both calls were launched in the last quarter of 2021, within Montserrat Email List the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) of the Government of Spain, financed with NextGeneration EU European funds. To reinforce the stranding networks, 4.5 million euros will be allocated, which will be distributed among the 16 selected projects. These grants will allow the network to increase the quality of the data collected from stranded specimens, improve the care and management of strandings of emblematic species such as sea turtles or cetaceans, renew the facilities in which the animals are cared for, narrow collaboration with the sectors that interact most with stranded species (fishermen and yacht clubs) and raising awareness in society about the problem of strandings and the importance of taking care of the sea. SUPPORT FOR CITES CENTERS On the other hand, regarding the call to support CITES centers, 13 projects have been selected, which will receive aid for a total value of 2.4 million euros.
