Retail spending is still 12% lower than in 2007

In 2017, residents in the Valencian Community spent 54,398 million euros on goods and services. 30.4% of this expense was allocated to the acquisition of products in retail trade, which amounted to 16,540 million euros. This amount has increased by 2% compared to the previous year, which shows the recovery of spending by residents of the Valencian Community, although it is still 12% lower than in 2007.

The average per capita expenditure on the acquisition of goods and Email Data services by residents in the Valencian Community in 2017 is 11,082.6 euros. Of this consumption, spending on purchases in retail has been estimated at 3,369.7 euros, an increase of 1.8 percentage points compared to the previous year.

55.7% of this expense is allocated to the acquisition of food and drug products. This group of goods is the main destination of consumption in commercial goods and is the item in which there has hardly been a relevant change in recent years.

In 2017 there was a situation of stagnation in residents' spending on daily goods, going from a per capita expenditure of 1,934.2 euros in 2016 to 1,878.1 euros in 2017. The reduction in food waste and greater consumption outside the home (in 2017 spending on consumption outside the home has increased by 5.6%), can explain the lower purchase of daily goods by residents in the Valencian Community.

In the personal equipment item, which includes clothing, footwear and accessories, per capita spending is 642.7 euros. This amount represents 19.1% of the total expense. In the last year, this item of goods has increased by 13.1%, mainly in the items of clothing and travel and other personal items.

The recovery in demand for housing together with the lower prices of furniture and appliances has led to an increase in spending on home equipment, which includes furniture, appliances, DIY, household goods and home textiles. In 2017, per capita spending on this item of goods has been estimated at 341.1 euros. 7.9% more than in 2016.

Residents allocate 15.1% of spending to leisure and culture, technology and other occasional consumption products. This item of occasional goods is the one that has grown the least in the last year, due to the reduction in spending on leisure and cultural goods, such as books, toys, stationery and newspapers.
