The eye inside the cells that wants to revolutionize the pharmaceutical industry
Thecell is a basic component in all living beings. The human body is made up of trillions of cells. For this reason, understanding its behavior is key to the prevention of a multitude of pathologies and to the adequate development of drugs that treat them.
The silicon microchips developed byA4Cell penetrate cells and allow intracellular physiological processes to be monitored. The data extracted are essential for the discovery of new drugs, the effects of new compounds on cells and early diagnosis.
We interviewed Elena Rivas, CEO of A4Cell and vice president Email Data of the Spanish Association of Bioenterprises (Asebio).

An eye inside the cells
– How did the idea of starting the startup come about? Why choose the field of biomedicine?
The company emerged in thanks to the licensing of a patent at the Barcelona Institute of Microelectronics (CSIC) with the help of the BeAble venture capital fund .

It all started with the development of silicon nanodevices that had the peculiarity that they could be functionalized on surfaces. These chips can be used in different molecules and the cells internalize them inside their cytoplasm without altering them. This allows us to have an eye inside the living cell, monitoring any process that happens inside it in real time.
– Is the product already on the market or have you not finished developing it yet?
In this last year we have led a beta tester. We have called 15 end users from various parts of the world who have tested the product and who have completed reports that will allow us to have a technical dossier of the reagents that we want to put on the market. It is planned to start launching the product in 2022.
